This piece reinterprets the visual language of Russian Orthodox icons through self-portraiture and textile techniques. Using my own silhouette as the central form, the work explores visibility, reverence, and identity by positioning myself as both subject and icon. Beadwork and metal embellishment are layered onto deep wine-colored velvet and mounted over a mirrored surface, encouraging viewers to physically see themselves within the work while confronting questions of reflection, recognition, and belonging. The initials “DA” reference both the name I was given at birth in Russia and the name I carry now, allowing multiple histories and identities to coexist within a single object.
